Writing a blog is something I’ve toyed with, struggled with really for about four or five years. I’ve kept a journal for decades. I enjoy writing. But making it public was a challenge. I talk, yes, but I’m a very private person.
After balancing life as a mother with life as a professional musician: singer, voice teacher, choir director I found myself at a crossroad in 2008-09. The ‘kids’ were adults either in or approaching their twenty’s. Other women with careers outside the home or otherwise might feel as I did. The word ‘obsolete’ kept creeping into my mind. Now that motherhood was no longer on the “front burner”, music wasn’t enough to occupy or inspire.
My children and music had both been my best ‘opus’. I did feather the nest by pursuing other interests including my first loves, theater and opera but I wanted to do something new. It was then that I discovered a ‘new voice’, passion…photography.
Music, theater and photography are very similar. Through all I’m learning to better appreciate silence, beauty, unrest, clarity, dissonance and creative order (or disorder); to search for vision without fear in a world that sometimes stifles. Vision is ageless, has no boundaries except our imagination.
“A visionary is one who can find his [or her] way by moonlight, and see the dawn before the rest of the world.”
—Oscar Wilde
In the sunset of my life I hope to explore those possible sunsets and dawns with new vision….. I do SO like the sun and moon…..and hope to get better at capturing them! They’re like quicksilver….
