Getting inFOCUS

DSC_0109Writing a blog is something I’ve toyed with, struggled with really for about four or five years. I’ve kept a journal for decades. I enjoy writing. But making it public was a challenge. I talk, yes, but I’m a very private person.

After balancing life as a mother with life as a professional musician: singer, voice teacher, choir director I found myself at a crossroad in 2008-09.  The ‘kids’ were adults either in or approaching their twenty’s. Other women with careers outside the home or otherwise might feel as I did. The word ‘obsolete’ kept creeping into my mind. Now that motherhood was no longer on the “front burner”, music wasn’t enough to occupy or inspire.

My children and music had both been my best ‘opus’.  I did feather the nest by pursuing other interests including my first loves, theater and opera but I wanted to do something new.  It was then that I discovered  a  ‘new voice’, passion…photography.

Music, theater and photography are very similar.  Through all  I’m learning to better appreciate silence, beauty, unrest, clarity, dissonance and creative order (or disorder); to search for vision without fear in a world that sometimes stifles. Vision is ageless, has no boundaries except our imagination.

“A visionary is one who can find his [or her] way by moonlight, and see the dawn before the rest of the world.”DSC_0084

Oscar Wilde

In the sunset of my life I hope to explore those possible sunsets and dawns with new vision….. I do SO like the sun and moon…..and hope to get better at capturing them! They’re like quicksilver….

What a wonderful beginning to your Brave New Endeavor (World – if you will).
I’m hoping your first pic is a Sunrise as to depict the Beginning of your New Journey.
You referenced Quicksilver but other than the AMAZING COLORS one sees at SunRise & SunSet, I liken it to a drop of Mercury you find if one accidentally broke an old fashioned thermometer.
The small drops of the brilliant liquid rolled around, unable to actually be touched or caught, yet so bright & shiny that if you had a larger quantity it would be blinding to the eyes.
I look forward to both SEEING & Reading your Adventures over the next year & Beyond!!
This looks to be a Long & Beautiful ROAD! I think anyone that comes along will enjoy the JOURNEY.

Thanks so much Dot! Frankly, you (and Greg) were in the back of my mind throughout this process. It’s quite cathartic…

I’ve thought about blogging myself, but … my drivel … I wouldn’t be brave enough to publicize it. I applaud you and am looking forward to reading more. Great start!

Thanks for visiting, reading and for your kind words Karen. The idea has been a work in progress for quite a few years. The camera gave me the final push to publish. In the two weeks it’s been up I’ve had about 200 ‘hits’ on the blog….That’s a good start. If it’s something you’re interested in, go for it! Thanks again!
